On vacation 7/15 through 8/1

No posting for a while.

No resting either.

A vacation is supposed to be a time to relax, isn't it?

Yet we have plans for almost every minute of the trip we're taking.

Schedules. Appointments, a list of people to see and places to go.

A vacation?

Hardly.

It's more like orchestrated chaos.

I hope I survive it so I can get back to my dull, boring and predictible life.

wait a minute, what's wrong here?

OK, we are torturing foreign nationals in Cuba and the president doesn't think there is anything wrong with that, right?

But a Haitian born naturalized US citizen who has been convicted of a crime can be deported back to Haiti ONLY if he can proven that he won't be tortured upon his return. (In Today's Miami Herald 7/12/06 "Likelihood of torture could block deportation".)

Doesn't anyone else see how inconsistant this sounds?

intimidation

Sometimes you feel intimidated by the thought of going to another place, like a shopping mall out of your area. I did. Yesterday.

Since my son is getting married at the end of this month it's getting a bit hectic with last minute stuff. One of which is the "hair appointment" for the mothers and the wedding party.

Well, Henry from Coco's Day Spa, is going to do our hair, and yesterday was my turn to see what kind of shape he could put my hair into. Unfortunately Coco's is in the Aventura Mall.

To those not familiar with Aventura it's just about as far north in Dade County as you can go. From my house, even going on interstate highways it's a drive of one hour and a half. That's a long drive for a hair cut. The mall has a reputation of being upscale too, and since I am the buy on sale kind of outlet store buyer I didn't know if I would stick out like a sore thumb there.

Turns out I fit in just fine. I am an average person of average overweight. I thought I'd be surrounded by skinny rich women. I wasn't

The spa isn't glitzy, just sounds like it. And Henry the stylist is good - and knows what he talks about. My hair and I have a mutual understanding about how it can be worn. I basically gave up tyring to adapt my fine, limp and bodiless hair to the "style of the day" and just let my hair go it's natural way, with adaptations. I guess it's not always the most in fashion way of wearing it, but Henry and I both agreed there isn't much else I can do with it, so he cut the hair to allow maxium style for the limited cooperation of hair folicles.

So basically I get to wear my hair in the style I am accustomed to for my son's wedding. I will feel comfortable and won't feel liek I stick out like a sore thumb.

freedom

Why do people think that freedom only applies to themselves?

They are free to give you their opinion, and by God you'd better agree with it, because THEY have freedom of speech, but apparently you don't.

When are they going to teach Civics in school again?

When are they going to teach our children that EVERY American has the same freedoms?

Some day when I win the lottery I will donate money to some nice white bread and mayo schools on condition that they include a real course in what being a citizen of America really means.

Verbing wierds language

I have an old cartoon, Calvin and Hobbs, that talks about "verbing" nouns. Well, it looks like the cartoon was prophetic because the word Google, a proper noun, is now officially a verb according the the Oxford English Dictionary.

Does that mean that it's the only verb in the English language that requires capitalization?

One wonders about these things.

July 5,2006

It's hard for me to believe that Independence Day made me depressed.

It wasn't the cook out with family, or the flag flying by the front door that made me sad, it's the fact that what America was is no more. The freedom people think they still enjoy is eroded.

Americans who are content to be told that they live in the best country in the world beleive the Administration propaganda and feel justified to wear the flag thinking they are patriots. They want to protect the flag while purposely desecrating it by wearing Joe Boxer shorts and sitting on the flag.

I feel so sorry for those who will be disalussioned when the truth finally dawns on them.

I pity them and it depresses me that I have to.

stormy weather

Woke up this morning at 7:30 to nothing. No AC no lights, no humming sounds from electronic gadgets that are constantly plugged in to the electricity. A power outage.

So I called the electric comapny who said via the electronic voice mail menu that the problem was limited to 94 residential customers and a crew was being dispatched to fix the trouble in the "main". It would be repaired by 9:45 they said and they would phone with "updates" on the repair.

The trouble in the "main" was a fuse that blew out in the power pole located in our back yard. The trucks arrived to fix it before the first phone call from the automated system telling me that trucks were on their way.

The electricity was turned back on at about 9:00 a.m. and about 15 minutes later the phone call came telling me it was repaired. (As if the running air conditioner wasn't a clue.) The voice message also said the "cause" of the outage was stormy weather.

Stormy weather? We had some rain overnight, but no winds and nothing approaching a real downpour. So if a passing rain cloud can cause our house to lose power I can only imagine what the rest of the hurricane season hold in store for my house.

Stormy weather, indeed!
